Starveil, the sci-fi fantasy online multiplayer RPG I worked on with Sukkoy is now open source. Code is licensed under the MIT license while assets are licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. The repository can be found here.
In retrospect, we got quite far with Starveil, I wrote a whole post-mortem on it, but we just couldn’t finish it and it was sitting there, hanging over our heads, code rotting on our disks. Every few weeks I kept coming back to it in my thoughts, and asking “What do we do with it now?”. Even writing the post-mortem didn’t really give enough closure to me.
So, inspired by the Stop Killing Games initiative, I suggested we actually open source the whole game. Let people run the game themselves if they want to, modify and continue it if they want, get inspired or learn something from the source code. Though the biggest benefit to me personally is just preservation. Now it’s out there, anyone can clone the repository and maybe just keep it around forever. It’s a nice thought, anyway.
Now that we’ve gone through it and Starveil is open source, maybe I can put its ghost to rest, properly move on and do something else (something smaller!). Keep your eyes peeled, when I do start a new project, I will make sure to write about it here :)
